The Texas Tubman Travel Initiative

A Model That Changed What Reproductive Care Travel Could Look Like

When women in Texas were forced to travel out of state to receive abortion health care, the Texas Tubman Travel Initiative stepped in to ensure they did not have to face that journey alone.

The initiative was created in response to a simple but urgent reality: women were being pushed across state lines for medical care, often with little information, limited resources, and no one to guide them through the process. Traveling alone for a medical procedure can be overwhelming, especially for those who had never flown on a plane, never traveled outside their state, and did not know what to expect once they arrived.

The Tubman Travel Project designed a different experience.

Instead of leaving women to navigate the journey alone, the initiative provided structured travel coordination, personal accompaniment, and a framework of care that ensured every traveler had support from the moment their trip began until they returned home.

For many women, what they had feared would be a traumatic experience became something entirely different: a day marked by care, connection, and dignity.

The Texas Tubman Travel Initiative demonstrated that reproductive health travel could be organized in a way that centered the well-being of the Freedom Flyer rather than the chaos of the system surrounding her.

How the Model Worked

Consider the reality many faced.

A woman who had never boarded an airplane before suddenly needed to fly to another state. She often arrived alone, navigating unfamiliar airports, unfamiliar cities, and a medical procedure she had never experienced before.

The Tubman Travel Initiative was built to meet that exact moment.

From the time restrictive abortion laws took effect in Texas, the initiative coordinated travel for more than 400 women, helping them journey from Texas to New Mexico where they could receive the care they wanted. Every woman became part of the community we called Freedom Flyers. The priority was to ensure that every Freedom Flyer experienced the journey with dignity, care, and meaningful support.

Every detail of the experience was designed intentionally. Travel logistics were organized, support systems were put in place, and each traveler was welcomed into an environment built around care and respect.

The result was a model that transformed the typical narrative that travel was a frightening and isolating experience into one defined by calm, dignity, and human connection.

For hundreds of women, the Texas Tubman Travel Initiative ensured that traveling for abortion care was not something they had to endure, but instead became a transformative experience.

It became proof that when travel is structured with compassion, coordination, and care, even the most difficult journeys can be transformed into experiences of relief, support, and triumph.

One Full Day, Start to Finish

We streamlined the process so travel and care could happen in just one day. From departure in Texas to the return home, every detail was planned and taken care of. Travelers flew to Albuquerque, where they received abortion care at one of the five trusted clinics we partnered with. Afterward, they had time to rest, recover, and prepare for the journey home.

We Handled the Details

Traveling for an abortion could feel overwhelming, but no one had to do it alone. The initiative took care of flights, local transportation, and scheduling so freedom flyers could focus on themselves. Whether someone traveled as part of our largest group (28) or our small group, she was never left feeling isolated or unsupported.

A Safe, Supportive Experience

We envisioned a world where women could lovingly and safely reach the places where they could receive the reproductive care they wanted, making barriers irrelevant.

Rejuvenation Center

Our Freedom Flyers often had a long day of travel in order to receive the care they wanted. We provided what we call the rest and rejuvenation center where they could eat a wonderful meal, create a piece of art, sit outside and reflect or rest and recover with peace of mind. The intention was to give the kind of care that was
